Ria d’Etel, the jewel of southern Brittany

Le Moténo Campsite - Aerial view of Ria d\'Etel River

A gem of southern Brittany, the ria d’Etel reveals a beautiful coast spectacularly divided, stretched along an arm of the sea that delves into the land. Bathed in waters of ever-changing colours, the Ria d’Etel has been a hotspot for writers, poets, musicians all seeking the “glaz,” that elusive Breton tint, a blend of blue, green and grey… This ria entices through its sinewy contours, its scattered boulders such as the small island of Nohic, its secret coves and its charming little ports, such as picturesque Vieux Passage, and Magouër, the last port before the ocean.

It is essential to arrive early in the morning in order to truly capture the magic of the ship graveyard, when the first rays of sunlight illuminate the landscape with stunning contrasts opposite Etel port. For those staying at le Moténo Campsite, it is a quick and simple journey to the path that runs along the Ria. From here, prick up your ears for the sounds of birdsong: herons, egrets, terns, European shag etc, that blend in with the smells of gorse and heather…

And don’t forget to go hunting for the other gems of Morbihan

Le Moténo Campsite - Morbihan - Aerial view of Gulf of Morbihan and Quiberon

The Ria d’Etel may be the closest tourist hotspot to our campsite, but Morbihan contains plenty of others. Just under 25 miles from our establishment, ripe for exploration, is the Gulf of Morbihan, an inland sea stretching 44mi², and interweaving with fifty or so islands and islets of all different sizes. The Ile aux Moines is the largest of these formations, and home to 600 people every year. This island can be visited by hopping onto the water bus from Port Blanc.

Around the Golf of Morbihan, visitors can also head to Carnac, a land that contains the largest cluster of megaliths in the world ! Not far from Carnac Beach, the peninsula of Quiberon is another must-see site for tourists in southern Brittany. Quiberon is also the spot where one can find the water buses that ensure the connection between the land and Belle Ile en Mer. One of the other musts on a tourist’s to-do list when in Morbihan, is to visit the medieval city of Vannes as well as the château de Suscinio, which was once the summer abode of the Dukes and Duchesses of Brittany.

Le Moténo Campsite - Morbihan - Interceltic Festival of Lorient

Another destination worth visiting from our Le Moténo campsite, why not head on down to the coast of Lorient? Every summer, this port town hosts the famous Interceltic Festival, where you can witness the gathering in the streets and the Moustoir stadium of the bagads, Breton bands, from all over the Celtic world. Among Lorient’s many charming attractions is the submarine base, built by the Germans during WWII. Today, it is home to the la cité de la mer Eric Tabarly sailing museum. Not far from Lorient, you can also visit Port Louis and Hennebont, two other locations steeped in history…
