From La Rochelle to Royan, with an unmissable stop to the île de Ré and the île d’Oléron, our department is bursting with treasures. We recommend visiting, in no particular order: the Corderie Royale Rope Factory Museum in Rochefort, the The Régulus Caves in Meschers, Gironde, The City of Oysters in Marennes, the fortifications of Saint Martin de Ré, and take a cruise around Fort Boyard.

La Palmyre is a top tourist destination in Charente-Maritime. Our campsite may be located in the forest of Coubre, which links Les Mathes to Royan, but La Palmyre, the seaside resort of Mathes – is not that far off. Just ten minutes and you’re there. Entirely facing the sea, and bursting with seaside and water activities to try out, you will find the seaside resort of La Palmyre. Composed of over five miles of beach, some of them wild, such as that located around the Baie de Bonne Anse, and some much more popular, such as that of Pins de Cordouan.
The Baie de Bonne Anse is a certified Natura 2000 zone. This privileged nature site is ideal for those explorers enticed by large open spaces and the beauty of nature, a nature abundant with fauna and flora. Migrating birds, travelling along the Atlantic from the Great North to Africa, find a haven in this nature spot. Take a wander through this site, and keep an eye out for the numerous species you may spot, such as the brant, the kentish plover and even the red knot.
And on your way back from La Palmyre, don’t hesitate to drop by the zoo that shares the name. La Palmyre Zoo is considered one of the moststunning animal parks in all of France. The zoo contains over 1 600 animals with 110 different species, and welcomes 750 000 visitors who come to admire them, each year The La Palmyre water sports centre with its wide array of activities, is also worth a stop: from beginner’s sailing lessons to kite surfing, or even wing foil, thrill-seekers of the water will be spoilt for choice!
