The department of Charente-Maritime is considered one of the top tourist hotspots of the Atlantic area. La Rochelle, île de Ré Island, Fort Boyard, Rochefort, etc. are considered some of the must-see sights. Head out from the Couleurs de la Coubre Campsite and make your way north, there you will discoverMarennes, which is notably renowned for its delicious oysters, in Marennes d’Oléron. The coast is also home to several defensive infrastructures, such as Fort Boyard, Fort Louvois, as well as Fort Vauban de Fouras. All of these fortifications were built in order to protect the entry of the estuary of Charente and the Arsenal de Rochefort.
The military Arsenal de Rochefort may no longer exist, but the city still opted to preserve an important piece of cultural heritage linked to naval construction. Don’t hesitate to stop bythe National Navy Museum, as well as the Corderie Royale rope factory and its various forms of ship repair, one of which was actually used in the construction of the replica of l’Hermione, the famous frigate belonging to the Marquis de La Fayette!
